Er, der Leichtschaffende, schwebte zwischen den Genres, pendelte zwischen den Richtungen, fühlte sich wohl auf Zwischenplätzen, war auf vielen Feldern heimisch und hatte als Komponist doch nur ein Ziel: sich im Lied auszud…rücken. Liedhaft hatte alles zu sein, was er anfaßte; zum Singen, zum Nachsingen mußte es sich am Ende eignen. Er komponierte leicht wie Mozart und Offenbach. Melodienfülle stand ihm zu Gebote wie diesen beiden, wie dem Liedmeister Schubert auch, wie Johann Strauß. Alles bei ihm aber ist auf melodiöse Floskeln zu reduzieren, auf den vortrefflichen thematischen Einfall, an dem es ihm nicht gebrach. Diesen Phänomen ordnet sich, was er komponiert hat, unter, der einzeln stehende Schlager so gut wie die Opernarie, der Klavierblues so überzeugend wie der versiert instrumentierte Abschnitt in einem seiner Konzertwerke.
