Afteryearsofresearch, thecombinationofmultipleclassi ershasbecomeawellestablishedandexciting researcharea,whichprovidese ectivesolutionstodi cultpatternrecognition problems. Aconsiderablebodyofempiricalevidencesupportsthemeritof- signingcombinedsystemswhoseaccuracyishigherthanthatofeachindividual classi er,andvariousmethodsforthegenerationandthecombinationofm- tipleclassi ershavebecomeavailable. However,despitetheprovedutilityof multipleclassi ersystems,nogeneralanswertotheoriginalquestionaboutthe possibilityofexploitingthestrengthswhileavoidingtheweaknessesofdi erent classi erdesignshasyetemerged. Otherfundamentalissuesarealsoamatterof on-goingresearchindi erentresearchcommunities.
