Ein Indiz ist dafür, dass allein 15 Handschriften bis auf den heutigen Tag in europäischen Bibliotheken, Museen und Universitäten aufbewahrt werden und gegebenenfalls eingesehen werden können. Dazu kommen noch sieben bekannte und eine nicht genau zu beziffernde Anzahl unbekannter Inkunabeln. Besonders zur Zeit der deutschen Aufklärung und Romantik tauchen immer öfter sternschnuppenartig, wie etwa die bloße Namenserwähnung in Theodor Fontanes'Der Stechlin'oder irrlichternd, wie'Die neue Melusine'von Goethe, Namen von Dichtern oder Literaturinteressierten im Zusammenhang mit dem sagenhaften und genealogischen Stoff der Melusine auf, zum Beispiel E. Th. A. Hoffmann, Paracelsus, de La Motte-Fouquet, Gottsched, Tieck, Fontane, Lortzing und andere. Hinzuweisen ist auch noch auf die in Märchen vorkommenden Meerjungfrauen (Undine) oder auf Andersens'Kleine Meerjungfrau'. Die frühneuhochdeutsche Fassung des Thüring von Ringoltingen ist die Grundlage der vorliegenden Übertragung ins Hochdeutsche.
