For a work of cinematic or visual art amounts to nothing if it tells you nothing about your own life: film and art are always about what was and what could have been. Magnificent Obsessions takes up these existential questions in texts and images, including selections from Brunners impressive collection of movie stills and reproductions of his favorite art works. As in movies, people are the focus, the protagonists, of Brunners sometimes mordantly blunt and yet affectionate, sometimes almost tender writings. When he loses the love of his life, Swiss art dealer Thomas Ammann, to AIDS, he writes about their shared happiness so as not to be consumed by grief. He remembers the glamorous Elisabeth Bossard (Thema Selection), his lover for many years, and relates anecdotes from a flirtation in Venice with Edmund White, the American writer who became a friend. He recounts his love-hate relationship with Swiss filmmaker Daniel Schmid, replete with intimate glimpses of the late German filmmakers Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Schroeter, their works and the whole scene around them. It was the film curator Brunner who brought the films of his friends John Waters and Andy Warhol to Switzerland early onbypassing the censors. Brunner knew the light and dark sides of the Dream Factory, but was always ready and willing to succumb yet again to its Imitation of Life, as Douglas Sirk titled one of his great melodramas.With a preface by Stefan Zweifel and an epilog by John Waters. Denn ein Film, ein Kunstwerk ist nichts, wenn es einem nichts über das eigene Leben sagt. Kino und Kunst - und eben dieses Buch: Stets erzählt es über das, was war und was möglich gewesen wäre, wer man ist und wer man hätte sein wollen. Magnificent Obsessions tut dies in Text und Bild, angereichert mit Filmstills aus Brunners eindrücklicher Sammlung sowie Reproduktionen geliebter Kunstwerke. Erzählt wird, wie sich die Welt, das Reisen, die Hotels und Ausstellungen seit Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts verändert haben, welche Kleidung und Haarschnitte man damals trug und heute trägt. Aber wie im Film stehen die Menschen im Zentrum, Protagonist:innen, über die Brunner mal beissend direkt, aber auch zugewandt und bisweilen fast zärtlich schreibt. Im Moment, als er seine Lebensliebe, den Galeristen Thomas Ammann, an Aids verliert, spricht er vom geteilten Glück, um nicht von der Trauer aufgefressen zu werden. Er erinnert sich an seine glamouröse Geliebte Elisabeth Bossard (Thema Selection), mit der er lange Jahre zusammen gewesen ist, erzählt anekdotisch von einem Venedig-Flirt mit Edmund White, dem amerikanischen Schriftsteller, der ihm ein Freund geworden ist, oder berichtet von der Hass-Liebe zu Daniel Schmid, wobei er einen intimen Einblick in das Kino und Umfeld auch der Filmemacher Fassbinder und Schröter gewährt. Es gibt immer zwei Bewegungen in diesem Leben: eine Flucht in die Künste wie auch den Willen und die Grosszügigkeit, diese Obsessionen zu teilen, sie unermüdlich zu vermitteln. Brunner brachte schon früh - an der Zensur vorbei -Filme von John Waters oder Andy Warhol, mit denen er auch freundschaftlich verbunden war, in die Schweiz. Vor der Verbreitung des Internet hätte man diese sonst nicht oder erst viel später zu sehen bekommen. Brunner weiss um Licht- und Schattenseiten der Traumfabrik, lässt sich aber immer wieder gerne verführen: Imitation of Life, so der Titel eines des grossen Melodramen des Regisseurs Douglas Sirk, den Brunner verehrt und dessen Nachlass er heute betreut. Kein Zufall, sind die «Bigger than Life»-Filme des Melodramas doch das beliebteste Filmgenre von Brunner, wozu auch Werke von Vincente Minnelli, Nicolas Ray, Pedro Almodóvar oder Rainer Werner Fassbinder gehören, Leuchttürme auf stürmischer See und sicherer Hafen in einem bewegten Leben.

But these biographical and historical elements of the authors life come to the fore in an ongoing dialogue with Hollywood classics, films dauteur, contemporary art and literature. For a work of cinematic or visual art amounts to nothing if it tells you nothing about your own life: film and art are always about what was and what could have been. Magnificent Obsessions takes up these existential questions in texts and images, including selections from Brunners impressive collection of movie stills and reproductions of his favorite art works. As in movies, people are the focus, the protagonists, of Brunners sometimes mordantly blunt and yet affectionate, sometimes almost tender writings. When he loses the love of his life, Swiss art dealer Thomas Ammann, to AIDS, he writes about their shared happiness so as not to be consumed by grief. He remembers the glamorous Elisabeth Bossard (Thema Selection), his lover for many years, and relates anecdotes from a flirtation in Venice with Edmund White, the American writer who became a friend. He recounts his love-hate relationship with Swiss filmmaker Daniel Schmid, replete with intimate glimpses of the late German filmmakers Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Schroeter, their works and the whole scene around them. It was the film curator Brunner who brought the films of his friends John Waters and Andy Warhol to Switzerland early onbypassing the censors. Brunner knew the light and dark sides of the Dream Factory, but was always ready and willing to succumb yet again to its Imitation of Life, as Douglas Sirk titled one of his great melodramas.With a preface by Stefan Zweifel and an epilog by John Waters.
