ODD allows its users to customize the P5 version of the TEI XMLformats by writing XML schemas in a literate programming fashion. ODDdocuments are valid Text Encoding Initiative XML files using the'tagdocs' or Documentation Elements module, which is a specificationmeta-schema format for documenting the relations and constraints betweenthe modules, classes, elements, attributes, and content models whichmake up a particular TEI customization. In this way it is a meta-schemalanguage which allows the generation of DTDs, W3C XML Schema, Relax NGCompact Syntax, and Relax NG XML Syntax schemas.
