Godse glaubte, dass Gandhis Politik die hinduistische Gesellschaft untergrub, und traf die radikale Entscheidung, ihn zu ermorden. Am 30. Januar 1948 näherte sich Godse Gandhi während eines Gebetstreffens und schoss auf ihn, was zu seinem Tod führte.
