Minor handling wear, book is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Bright untorn dust jacket shows minor wear. -- This book compares two Romanian villages, Nucsoara in the mountains and Scornicesti in the plains, to examine the impact of coerced modernization under communism. Based on fieldwork, surveys, archival research, and interviews, it reconstructs how collectivization, decollectivization, state planning, and surveillance reshaped property relations, social conflict, political attitudes, and everyday rural life. The analysis shows how elites manipulated landholding, status groups, and lifestyles to produce dependency, while villagers responded with both adaptation and resistance. Attention is given to the destruction and replacement of traditional elites, the creation of a neo?dependent peasantry, and the ways in which authoritarian modernization redefined citizenship in the countryside. The contrasting destinies of the two villages - one associated with anti?communist partisans and repression, the other systematized and industrialized as a showcase commune - illustrate the breadth of communist experiments in agrarian transformation. The study situates Romanian rural change within wider debates about authoritarianism, social engineering, and the long?term legacies of forced modernization in Eastern Europe.

Neuware - This dramatic story of land and power from twentieth-century Eastern Europe is set in two extraordinary villages: a rebel village, where peasants fought the advent of Communism and became its first martyrs, and a model village turned forcibly into a town, Dictator Ceaüescu's birthplace. The two villages capture among themselves nearly a century of dramatic transformation and social engineering, ending up with their charged heritage in the present European Union.
