In 1827, after Beethoven's death, the German publisher of the first edition posthumously ironed out these discrepancies as he saw fit, and later editions simply adopted his interventions. Rainer Cadenbach's volume is the first attempt to produce an authoritative text for op. 135. Beethoven's contradictory formulations are laid bare, allowing musicians to make their own decisions. This ambitious new edition also finds room for ideal page turns._; L'op. 135 présente deux aspects antinomiques: il s'agit d'une part d'une composition des plus appréciées, mais d'autre part, toutes les tentatives d'édition sont restées insatisfaisantes. Les sources qui nous sont parvenues posent divers problèmes. En effet, l'autographe de Beethoven renferme nombre de contradictions en comparaison à sa copie autographe des parties. L'éditeur de la première édition, parue en 1827, a aplani à sa convenance les divergences car le compositeur était décédé entre-temps. Les éditions ultérieures ont repris telles quelles les corrections ainsi effectuées. Avec la présente édition, Rainer Cadenbach tente de présenter un texte authentique. Révélant les contradictions de l'oeuvre, il stimule l'initiative personnelle du musicien.
