Per la prima volta una mostra e un catalogo dedicati all'esperienza londinese di Peggy Guggenheim e alla sua prima… galleria, Guggenheim Jeune, che in soli diciotto mesi, dal gennaio 1938 al giugno 1939, divenne un punto di riferimento per le avanguardie europee, allestendo più di ventuno mostre e distinguendosi per la promozione di artisti locali e internazionali legati all'astrazione e al Surrealismo. Tra queste, una monografica su Jean Cocteau, la prima collettiva britannica dedicata al collage e una controversa esposizione di scultura contemporanea. In un contesto segnato da straordinaria vitalità creativa e da crescenti tensioni storiche, l'impresa anticipò sviluppi destinati a incidere profondamente sull'arte del Novecento. "Nonostante abbia vita breve, la galleria svolge un ruolo essenziale nel plasmare il contesto culturale del paese negli anni che precedono la Seconda guerra mondiale" proponendosi come "alternativa radicale" al conservatorismo istituzionale. Graina Subelyte e Simon Grant, curatori del progetto, sottolineano gli aspetti rivoluzionari e filantropici di Guggenheim Jeune, il cui successo "si misura sulla base di una visione curatoriale coraggiosa e sul supporto offerto alla sperimentazione d'avanguardia". Viene così passata dettagliatamente in rassegna una fase decisiva nella formazione di Peggy Guggenheim, attraverso 16 contributi che ricostruiscono la rete di relazioni e influenze che ne guidò la visione di collezionista e mecenate - da Marcel Duchamp a Mary Reynolds fino a Samuel Beckett -, analizzando in filigrana la breve parabola di un progetto che ha contribuito a scuotere i paradigmi dell'arte contemporanea britannica. Parallelamente ne viene indagato il percorso curatoriale, che si snoda attraverso tappe che vanno dall'astrattismo audace della prima personale londinese di Vasily Kandinsky, alle "bambole-ritratto" di Marie Vassilieff, dalla distorsione materica dei ritratti di Cedric Morris fino alle "mostre che non furono" e all'influenza che questa prima pionieristica scommessa artistica ebbe sulle collezioni pubbliche britanniche nel contesto postbellico. Si delineano dunque i passaggi iniziali di un filo rosso che unisce l'esperimento londinese a quello quinquennale di New York, Art of This Century, e infine della Peggy Guggenheim Collection di Venezia. Il catalogo presenta un ampio apparato iconografico che riunisce opere chiave presentate in quelle occasioni, accanto a lavori coevi di artisti come Eileen Agar, Salvador Dalí, Barbara Hepworth, Rita Kernn-Larsen, Henry Moore, Piet Mondrian, Sophie Taeuber-Arp.
