Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good-. Illustrated by Alan Odle (illustratore). The dust jacket is tanned and soiled, with wrinkling at the front fore edge.; Often called Mark Twain's 1601, this is his short and cheerfully risqué, vulgar, and scatological satire of considerable sexual content. Set in Queen Elizabeth I's court, the discussions of the attendees are supposed to be extracted from the diary of the queen's old cup bearer. Privately and anonymously published in 1880, it appeared in dozens of editions. Its authorship finally acknowledged by Twain in 1906, was considered unpublishable in the trade press until 1960s US court decisions, about obscenity, paved the way. Written to approximate the style of Rabelais, it's not as deft as the latter's work, but it's still a good laugh and an example of what was shocking to the public in the late 19th century. This 1969 4to-size edition from Land's End Press is a reprint of the 1936 8vo-size edition "sold at ye beare Back-Side in Maiden Lane," London, quite possibly a fictitious 'publisher.' The extravagant, intentionally vulgar and titillating drawings are by English artist and illustrator Alan Odle (1888-1948). Odle's surreal and grotesque style was curving and rolling, seldom containing anything rectilinear. Drawn in monochrome, the 8 plates and 4 in-text cuts are generally phallic, scatologic, or otherwise sexual. This 4to book is 11 1/4" x 9". Unpaginated and 24 pp. Bound in red cloth over boards with the title in gilt to the front and spine. In clean, sharp-cornered, Fine condition in a fully intact Very Good- dust jacket. An entertaining and cheerfully offensive book.; B&W Drawings; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 24 pages.
