The Practical Self Instructor. Standard American Book of Knowledge for Home Study. Descriptive and Illustrative of the World's Greatest Works. Concise and Exhaustive Articles on Science, Arts, Mechanics and Industries. The Latest Statistics and Official Census. 20th Century Compendium of Reference. Chicago, Ill.: Columbia Publishing House, n.d. C. 1900. Original decorated binding measures 9.75 x 6.75", 8vo. In good condition. Boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine collapsed. Edges of text-block marbled. Gilt lettering and deco on binding normally dulled/soiled, but attractive. Normal toning in margins; scattered age-staining. Binding intact. No subscriber's in rear. Binding intact. Please see photos. A "salesman's dummy" (also called a salesman's sample or prospectus) was meant to be taken door-to-door to show prospective subscribers. The front cover of the dummy is identical to the published book, while the text consists of a few pages from the book (primarily those pages with illustrations). Since the sample is thinner than the finished book, the spine samples are instead tipped onto the front pastedown. At the rear of the volume are leaves of ruled paper with the headings intended to be filled with orders. Like all publisher's prospectuses, this dummy includes only a fraction of the text.
