A revised edition of Noah Webster's groundbreaking speller, The American Spelling Book. Noah Webster (1758-1843) was the famous American lexicographer and author who wrote the predecessor to modern Merriam-Webster dictionaries. The American Spelling Book was first published under this title in 1786 but had its name changed again in 1829. It was one of the best-selling books in the United States at the time. Webster intended for this spelling textbook to be used by children. He was an educational reformer and wanted to present the study of the English language to children in a way that could be easily learned and understood. Webster sought to have his English lessons (such as those in this textbook) structured in a step-by-step manner with increasing complexity and difficulty as students progressed in their studies. This book concentrates on reading and pronunciation. The book begins with the alphabet and single syllables. As the book progresses, relatively more complex pronunciations, multi-syllable words, and sentences are introduced. Eventually, reading samples are provided so that students can practice reading sentences and paragraphs. Principally composed of many sequential lessons, tables, and exercises.
