VG. No dj. Red boards are clean and tidy. spine slightly sunned. gilt titling is bright and clean. internally pages are without blemish or marginalia - a lovely clean copy. This companion volume to Professor Water-house's Painting in Britain 1530-7790 describes the architecture of the period that stretches from the Early Renaissance to the post-Waterloo Greek and Gothic Revivals. Among the great names of those centuries were Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren, Vanbrugh, Robert Adam, and John Nash. During the same period were built Hampton Court, Hatfield, the new St Paul's, the City Churches, the graceful London Squares, and the crescents and terraces of Bath. In addition to the main text there are two long appendices, one on Scottish architecture and the other on the architecture c f the Thirteen Colonies. Numerous plans, the majority of which have been especially drawn for this book, and over three hundred half-tone illustrations form an integral part of the author's account.

1st edition-(Fine/VG)-This is NOT an ex-library book-Binding is red cloth hardcover with titles in gold on a black leather patch on spine; binding and text are VERY neat, clean and solid, FINE+ with NO extraneous writings. Pictorial dust jacket HAS price; overall neat, clean and bright, VG in Brodart plastic. Just light edgewear, minor chips head of spine and small missing piece bottom right corner of front panel. "While fully aware of the GREAT contribution of the 19th-century SCHOLARS to an understanding of ROMANESQUE and GOTHIC construction, this is a 20th-century approach to the subject. The PERIOD covered extends from the 7TH CENTURY (and the EARLIEST churches) to the 16TH and the end of the latest and PECULIARLY English form of GOTHIC, the PERPENDICULAR. The FIRST appearance of MONUMENTAL architecture in the great MONASTERIES and CATHEDRALS, the ACHIEVEMENTS of the later ANGLO-SAXON age, the great flowering in the 12TH CENTURY, the ASTONISHING precocity of the late 13TH and early 14TH CENTURIES, the MONASTIC buildings and GREAT houses are discussed VIVIDLY and in DETAIL, and a SPECIAL chapter is devoted to the REVOLUTIONARY change in character of the PARISH CHURCH in the 13TH and later centuries. The book is ILLUSTRATED with 91 LINE DRAWINGS and 192 pages of FABULOUS HALF-TONE PHOTOGRAPHS, which fully complement the text." 234 pages. An EXCELLENT collector's copy of a fairly UNCOMMON work.
