The sparsity of information here is not just a matter of the lack of published sources although this is a problem. It is that so little was ever recorded in the first place. As one correspondent told the author when writ- ing of her father's portrait by William Coldstream, I remember when Bill Coldstream painted my father they were discussing the framing endlessly but there is nothing in writing, not even a label on the frame'. The lack of avail- able documentation makes the study of frames more difficult. So little has been published that the researcher is obliged to undertake an inordinate amount of archival work. Every effort has been made to pursue both the obvious and the less obvious sources in the time available but I kn.
