Backhaus sagte "ich möchte bis zum letzten Augenblick meines Lebens musizieren". Am 26. und 28. Juni 1969 gab er dann seine beiden letzten Konzerte (das zweite vom Radio aufgezeichnet) in der Stiftskirche Ossiach in Kärnten. Während des letzten Konzertes erlitt er einen Schwächeanfall, kehrte aber nach Pausen noch zwei mal auf die Bühne zurück um weiterzuspielen. Am 5. Juli starb er in Villach. Sprache: de.
