Dies führt unwillkürlich zu der Frage, wie solche Emotionen entstehen.In diesem Zusammenhang liefert eine populäre Theorie in den Kognitionswissenschaften, das Bayesian Brain, ein attraktives vereinigendes Rahmenmodell, um die Wahrnehmung, die Kognition, die Aktion, sowie alle mentalen Zwischenvorgänge erklären zu können. Bisher wurde dieses Modell allerdings hauptsächlich im Kontext der Exterozeption, bei der die Beziehung zwischen dem Gehirn und der externen Welt im Fokus steht, ausgearbeitet. Seit wenigen Jahren wird jedoch auch die Interozeption, die Wahrnehmung interner physiologischer Reize innerhalb des Körpers, erfolgreich in das Bayesian Brain Modell integriert, um den menschlichen Organismus an sich besser verstehen zu können. Daraus folgt auch eine neue und vielversprechende Ansicht der Emotionen und ihrer Entstehung, die der vorliegenden Arbeit zugrunde liegen soll.
