I quote from the flap of the dust jacket: The curious adventure which brought British bayonets to Tibet s Forbidden City in 1904 was conceived by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, as a move in the Great Game between Russia and England in Central Asia. Reluctantly sanctioned (and then bedeviled) by the British Government, the expedition was carried out by Colonel Francis Younghusband, soldier, explorer, and mystic in spite of bitter cold and high altitude no troops have faced before or since. I am very pleased to be able to offer a very nice copy of: Bayonets to Lhasa The Story of the British Invasion of Tibet at the Turn of the Nineteenth Century, by Peter Fleming. This small hard cover book (5 ¾ x 8 ½ inches, 319 pages) was published by Harper & Brothers of New York, dated 1961 and the First Edition (so stated). The book is bound in tan cloth with a gilt facsimile signature of the Author on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. It is protected by a pictorial dust jacket featuring a picture of the Potala Palace on the cover. There is a nice map of the Expedition as a Frontispiece and four other maps. The book is also well illustrated with vintage b&w photos in three different groupings within the text. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows some minor edge wear including one small tear on the rear upper edge, some bumping to the spine tips and corners and some rubbing to the finish. Someone has crossed out the price and added another, on the inside flap of the dust jacket. The hard covers are clean and bright, but the gilt titling seems a bit muted. Inside, a former owner has left his name and date on the front endpaper but this is the only mark I found in the book. The pages and photos are clean and bright throughout without blemish; no age-toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…
