Clean sharp image, matted in white stock with clear mylar. François-Adrien Boieldieu was a French composer, born in 1775 In Rouen and died in 1834 In Varennes-Jarcy. Born under the ancien regime, Boieldieu gained fame during the Consulate and the Empire, was honored by the Bourbons and then ruined by the July Revolution. He was the principal French operatic composer during the first quarter of the 19th century. During the revolutionary period, Boieldieu left Rouen for Paris and quietly resided as a piano tuner and producing several comic operas (as the times allowed). In 1804 he moved to St. Petersburg accepting the position of composer of the court of the Tsar Alexander until 1810. While there, he composed nine operas including Aline, queen of Golconde (1804) and Les Voitures versées (1808). On his return to France, he re-established himself with the Parisian audience with La jeune femme en ange (1811), Jean de Paris (1812), The New Lord of the Village (1813) and a dozen other works.

Fu uno dei principali compositori francesi d'opera comica nel primo quarto del XIX secolo. Figlio di un segretario dell'arcivescovado, ricevette i primi insegnamenti musicali da Urbain Cordonnier e Charles Broche, ma si formò soprattutto da autodidatta. A sedici anni compose r omanze e un concerto per pianoforte, mostrando precoce talento melodico. Nel 1793 debuttò con La fille coupable a Rouen, poi si trasferì a Parigi nel 1796, dove lavorò come accordatore di pianoforti presso Érard. Nel 1797 ottenne successo con Zoraïme et Zulnar, che lo portò a insegnare pianoforte al Conservatorio. Nel 1800 compose Le calife de Bagdad, opera che consolidò la sua fama. Dal 1803 al 1810 fu maestro di cappella dello zar Alessandro I a San Pietroburgo, dove scrisse diverse opere su libretti francesi e adattamenti. Tornato a Parigi, si affermò con Jean de Paris (1812) e La dame blanche (1825), capolavoro su libretto di Eugène Scribe, ispirato a Walter Scott. Quest'ultima opera, con oltre 1500 recite, fu tra le più amate dell'Opéra-Comique. Boïeldieu compose anche musica strumentale, tra cui un celebre Concerto per arpa e sonate per pianoforte e violino. Il suo stile unisce grazia francese, eleganza melodica e senso teatrale.
