This book, a collection of essays spanning the first sixteen years of the 19th century, explores the societal changes brought about by peace after the Napoleonic Wars, most notably the shift in focus from the dramatic to the mundane. The author provides a wealth of examples to illustrate how postwar society became preoccupied with comfort and daily existence, and how this mundane existence was often romanticized. The author also delves into the complex motivations and contradictions of human nature, discussing how, despite our desire for peace, we often create internal conflicts through our passions and desires. The author concludes that, while our nature is turbulent, it is also capable of producing great works, and that it is through the tension between these extremes that growth and progress are possible. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
