With 32 plates, 6 folding plates, music for bugle signals. Original blind-stamped cloth, housed in custom tan moroccan leather back cloth slipcase with inner cloth chemise. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light wear to spine ends and corners. A very good of better set. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: First published in 1861 and reprinted several times before 1865. Cooke's tactics were used by both the Union and Confederate cavalries during the Civil War. Cooke was a Virginia native and graduate of the US Military Academy. He stayed loyal to the Union at the outbreak of the Civil War, although his son John R. Cooke became a Confederate general. One of his daughters married J.E.B. Stuart. Cooke is noted for his authorship of a this Army cavalry manual, and is sometimes called the "Father of the U.S. Cavalry." Following graduation from West Point, he served at a variety of installations in the American West and in the Black Hawk War. In 1833 he was promoted to first lieutenant in the newly formed 1st U.S. Dragoons. Cooke went on numerous trips of exploration into the Far West with the Dragoons. As Captain in command of 200 Dragoons, he disarmed and arrested Colonel Jacob Snively's Republic of Texas company of about 100 men, who were attempting to disrupt trade along the Santa Fe Trail, in what was described as the Second Texas Santa Fe Expedition. During the Mexican American War he led the Mormon Battalion from Santa Fe to California, establishing what became known as Cooke's Wagon Road, later to become the southern route to California during the California Gold Rush. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed a Brig. General and commanded a brigade of Cavalry during the Peninsula Campaign. During the Seven Days Battle, he ordered the charge of the 5th US Cavalry, sacrificing nearly the entire regiment. Excellent set, quite scarce and not often offered as a complete set of two volumes; an important work and nice complete set of the US Army's Civil War manual on cavalry operations.
