Hardback. Condizione: Good. The sociologist Jason Schnittker looks at the multiple actors involved in crafting the DSM and the many interests that the manual hopes to serve. The Diagnostic System urges us to become comfortable with the socially constructed nature of categorization and accept that a perfect taxonomy of mental-health disorders will remain elusive.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. The fourth edition of the late Lois Mai Chan's classic Cataloging and Classification covers the analysis and representation of methods used in describing, organizing, and providing access to resources made available in or through libraries. Since the last edition published in 2007, there have been dramatic changes in cataloging systems from the Library of Congress. The most notable being the shift from ACR2 to Resource Description and Access (RDA) as the new standard developed by the Library of Congress. With the help of the coauthor, Athena Salaba, this text is modified throughout to conform to the new standard. Retaining the overall outline of the previous edition, this text presents the essence of library cataloging and classification in terms of three basic functions: descriptive cataloging, subject access, and classification. Within this framework, all chapters have been rewritten to incorporate the changes that have occurred during the interval between the third and fourth editions. In each part, the historical development and underlying principles of the retrieval mechanism at issue are treated first, because these are considered essential to an understanding of cataloging and classification. Discussion and examples of provisions in the standards and tools are then presented in order to illustrate the operations covered in each chapter. Divided into five parts-a general overview; record production and structure, encoding formats, and metadata records; RDA; subject access and controlled vocabularies; and the organization of library resources-each part of the book begins with a list of the standards and tools used in the preparation and processing of that part of the cataloging record covered, followed by suggested background readings selected to help the reader gain an overview of the subject to be presented. This book is the standard text for the teaching and understanding of cataloging and classification.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. More than two million different species of organisms live on Earth--in all kinds of climates and places, ranging from the freezing North Pole to hot and steamy jungles, and from the highest mountains to the nethermost depths of the oceans. How do we keep track of the teeming abundance of life on Earth? Throughout history, humans have always been busy naming and classifying all living things. That process continues today. THE KINGDOMS OF LIFE: CLASIFICATION explores the amazing diversity of life on Earth and details one way scientists currently organize their records to make sure no organism is left unnamed and unclassified.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. DC:0-3 was the first developmentally based system for diagnosing mental health and developmental disorders in infants and toddlers. Its diagnostic categories reflected the consensus of a multidisciplinary group of experts in early childhood development and mental health. The newly revised DC:0-3R draws on empirical research and clinical practice that have occurred worldwide since 1994. DC:0-3R is designed to help mental health and other professionals. Paperback. Condizione: Good. As you have probably already guessed by the title, this book is not a page-turner; there are no life-changing secrets buried here. Rather, it is meant to serve as a resource for both seasoned professionals in and newcomers to the healthcare industry, a resource that provides concise but thorough descriptions of select clinical classification systems and select healthcare databases. We have followed a very simple format. Each entry on a named system or database presents a general description of its current state, followed by a timeline of key points in its evolution. Finally, a summary section describes present structure and terminology. This arrangement will, we hope, help the reader understand the antecedents and evolution of these systems and databases, and thereby help guide the choice of exactly the right such resources for a particular project. Which systems and databases align best with the questions you hope to answer, the information you hope to impart? The information presented here should make those decisions and selections faster, easier, smoother, and more confident.…
