The Role of Discourse Particles in Humor and Wit explores the intricate ways in which discourse particles contribute to the construction of humor in language. This book examines various linguistic examples where these seemingly minor elements play a significant role in shaping meaning and tone. By analyzing their use in comedic contexts, the author reveals how discourse particles can enhance wit and contribute to the subtleties of humor. This exploration not only deepens the understanding of language mechanics but also highlights the cultural implications of humor in communication. A fascinating read for linguists and humor enthusiasts alike. Publication Year: 2025. Aggiungi al carrello[xii], 236, [2]pp., 12mo. With a leaf of publisher s advertisements at end; a couple of minor spots. Nineteenth century calf, spine gilt; spine worn, but fairly firm on the sewing cords. First edition. The Dictionary of National Biography remarks that this work has somehow fallen out of sight, but none the less is it a more than ordinarily noticeable book. It antedates the (so-called) `Scottish School of Philosophy a century nearly; for in it Dr. Thomas Reid s philosophy of common sense - since glorified by Sir William Hamilton - is distinctly taught. More recent commentators have noted that Abercromby s scepticism frequently contradicts that of what became Thomas Reid s school of common sense, with some suggesting Abercromby more closely anticipates David Hume. Wing, Short-Title Catalogue, 1641-1700, A81.

Aggiungi al carrelloFour works in one volume, 8vo, pp. 175, [1] errata; 51; 77; 32; the last work lacking the half title, but the first work, more seriously, lacking two leaves of text (I4-5, pp. 134-138); the first and third works with title pages rather stained, but otherwise complete and in decent condition; in late 18th or early 18th c half calf over marbled boards, spine lettered 'Scarce Tracts'. First and only edition of Astell's Bart'lemy Fair - it was reissued in 1722 with a slightly altered title (the same sheets, just a different title page and preliminaries), which makes it clearer that the tract is an attack on Shaftesbury's Letter concerning Enthusiasm. This copy, alas, lacks two leaves of text (pp. 135-138), but is otherwise complete, and is accompanied by three other interesting pieces, two of which are specifically about the social and legal position of women in early 18th century Britain. Provenance. 19th century bookplate of the Surtees Library, Taunton Castle, presented by Lady Chapman.

The author's chief design in the present treatise was to furnish virtuosi with matters fit for ingenious conversations, which perhaps he performed in some measure because of the great, and not unpleasant, variety of things it contains. Abercromby speaks everywhere his mind with a philosophical freedom, neither blaming other men's fancies nor presuming too much upon his own conceits. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty, faded or difficult to read. Written in Old English. 252 pp. Englisch.
