An excellent collector's copy of Bob Newhart's debut book. Bob Newhart (1929-2024) was one of America's most celebrated comedians, actors, and writers. His debut comedy album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart (1960), became the first comedy album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard charts and earned Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best New Artist. He starred in the classic sitcoms The Bob Newhart Show (1972-1978) and Newhart (1982-1990), whose finale is widely regarded as one of television's greatest endings. During his career he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame, and remained a beloved performer for more than six decades. The book was designed by Fritz Metsch, a respected publishing designer whose work for Hyperion emphasized clean typography and contemporary presentation. The playful jacket concept, credited to Phil Rose, uses a nine-panel sequence of Bob Newhart's trademark deadpan facial expressions while on the telephone - a visual homage to the telephone monologues that launched his career. Jacket photographs were taken by Firouz Zahedi, the internationally recognized portrait photographer whose celebrity work has appeared in major magazines and advertising campaigns. The combination of Rose's design and Zahedi's photography creates one of the more recognizable comedian memoir jackets of the era.
