Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 268 pages. Dj worn. Name on ffep.Dalkey Archive is proud to a nnounce our Catalan Literature Series with a great Catalan classi c. A classic of contemporary Catalan literature, and a haunting and satirical portrait of a vanishing age, Llorenc? Villalonga's The Dolls' Room concerns the decline of Don Toni and Dona Maria A nto?nia Bearn: aristocrats, cousins, husband and wife, and member s of the decadent, age-old ruling class of the town that bears th eir name. Their story is told by the nai?ve family priest, Don Jo an, who was taken under Don Toni's wing as a schoolboy. Describin g the shabby grandeur of his benefactors' lives?their ancient, ru ndown family mansion, their grand but ruinous excursions to Paris and Rome, and the mysterious events that lead to their deaths?th e humbly devout Joan is continually challenged, and perhaps titil lated, by Don Toni's impious personality, his defiance of church authority, and his scandalous affairs. Partly condemning and part ly admiring his devilish mentor, the pure-minded Don Joan's lurid biography of the Bearns is a testament to the eternal attractive ness of the libertine, and the lengths to which we go in justifyi ng our own worst impulses.

Translated from the Catalan by Deborah Bonner. 354 pages. paperback. . keywords: Literature Translated Spain Catalan. FROM THE PUBLISHER - This is a novel by Llorenç Villalonga about the decline of the Majorcan aristocracy that has become a Catalan literature classic. Though originally written in Catalan by Llorenç Villalonga between 1952 and 1954, as a result of problems with the publisher, the work was first publish in Spanish in 1956. It was finally published in Catalan in 1961. A complex novel, the writer deals with the decline of a Majorcan aristocracy entrenched in the Ancien REgime of 15th-18th century France at the turn of the 20th century. The novel is divided into three parts. In the first part, a letter-prologue written by the family chaplain, who also serves as our narrator, sets the scene for us with respect to both characters and plot. The second part, which goes to make up the novel strictly speaking, can in turn be divided into two chapters: Bajo el influjo de Fausto (Under the influence of Faust) and La paz reina en Bearn (Peace reigns in Bearn). The epilogue focuses on a mysterious room after which the novel is named. The quality of the work was duly acknowledged upon being awarded the Critics' Award in 1963. The film version was directed by Jaime Chávarri in 1983. inventory #13495.
