He was forcedto leave his native country when the Germans invaded; After briefperiods in Italy and France, he came to the United Kingdom in 1940. Hereceived his B.Sc. in Mathematics and Physics, and PhD in Mathematicsfrom Bristol University, England, in 1948. Between 1951 and 1954 heworked at the University of Edinburgh with Max Born, writing the famoustext-book on Optics now usually known simply as 'Born and Wolf'.…
