Dewey, Filosofo e pedagogista statunitense (1859 - 1952), partito da posizioni kantiano-idealistiche, delinea i primi fondamenti del suo naturalismo umanistico. Con il riconoscere carattere funzionale al pensiero Dewey si accosta al pragmatismo; egli rifiuta però i motivi fideistici e irrazionalistici, presenti in W. James, mentre accetta da Charles S. Peirce il nuovo concetto di verità e di verificazione inteso in termini operativi. D. estendeva tale impostazione alle scienze e ai problemi della pratica, rifiutando ogni dicotomia tra fatto e valore. La conoscenza non è altro che la forma più complessa ed efficace di risoluzione delle situazioni problematiche che caratterizzano l'esistenza, in piena continuità con la sua più semplice matrice biologica. Le sue implicazioni per la metodologia scientifica e la filosofia trovano più ampia trattazione in Essays in experimental logic (1917). Con i neopositivisti, tuttavia, accetta di collaborare all'Encyclopedia of unified science, pubblicata a Chicago sotto la direzione di O. Neurath, con due saggi, il più ampio dei quali è Theory of valuation, in cui contro le interpretazioni emotiviste degli enunciati morali, sostenute da gran parte dei neopositivisti, propone la tesi della loro verificabilità scientifica e sociale. Il prezzo del libro è comprensivo delle spese di confezionamento e spedizione mediante raccomandata tracciabile.
