Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Used. In a world where the evolutionary clock ticks louder than a London bus on a rainy afternoon, Theodosius Dobzhansky presents us with "Evolution Genetics and Man," a mind-bending tome that aims to connect the dots between genetic mutations, natural selection, and, quite possibly, your questionable taste in socks. Published in 1963 by John Wiley and Sons?because clearly, every family needs a little genetic science tucked between the cookbooks and the dusty encyclopedias?this book is not just a read; it?s an experience that could leave you pondering your own lineage long after you?ve put it down. Good condition except someone has put manky old cellotape round the edges of the covers, but its not sticky or anything and is all falling off, so I don?t know why they did that. It gives the book an antique effect which is nice. Ah, Theodosius Dobzhansky?a name that rolls off the tongue with the elegance of a ballet dancer who has just tripped over their own feet. A biologist who famously declared that ?nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution,? Dobzhansky unfurls his genetic theories with the kind of enthusiasm usually reserved for enthusiastic amateur birdwatchers. One can almost hear him at dinner parties, passionately defending the importance of fruit flies in understanding human genetics while the rest of the guests quietly contemplate their escape routes. Flipping through the pages of this scholarly masterpiece feels a bit like rummaging through your grandfather?s attic: dusty, filled with oddities, and occasionally revealing a shiny gem that makes you question your entire existence. Each chapter tackles the grand tapestry of genetics, meticulously stitching together the threads of Mendelian principles and evolutionary theory, ensuring that by the time you reach the end, you?re either enthralled or in desperate need of a pint down the pub. But wait! Before you decide to add this book to your collection of tomes that you swear you?ll read one day (alongside that self-help book you promised yourself you?d start last year), consider what you?re getting into. Here?s a delightful taste of what you may?or may not?discover within these pages: A thrilling narrative about the struggles of geneticists that rivals the most gripping of soap operas. Impenetrable diagrams that make you question whether you?re looking at a genetic model or a child?s drawing of spaghetti. Unfettered excitement about the reproductive habits of various critters that might leave you blushing. Conversations about mutation rates that could turn even the most mundane social gathering into a debate of epic proportions. A deep dive into paternity tests that could make for some awkward family reunions. Condition: Used?but not in the way that suggests it has been through the trials of a hard life. No, this book has merely been perused by curious minds and perhaps used as a makeshift coaster during one too many discussions about the intricacies of human evolution over a cup of tea. Expect dog-eared pages, a slightly faded cover that adds an air of authenticity, and the kind of musty scent that only decades of knowledge can produce. It?s practically begging for a new home, preferably one where it will be appreciated, if not understood. So, whether you believe in Darwinism or think it?s merely a catchy band name, ?Evolution Genetics and Man? promises a riveting journey through the annals of biological chaos. Remember, this isn?t your average bedtime story; it?s a cerebral romp that might just have you feeling a tad superior to your friends who are still grappling with the basics of Mendel?s peas. Pick it up from Crappy Old Books today and prepare to impress (or confuse) your friends with a wealth of genetic trivia that they never knew they needed. Because who doesn?t want to be the life of the party with fun facts about alleles and genome mapping?

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover with DJ. Tan cloth with blue lettering on the spine. Brown DJ complete, but with scuffing and edgewear. No date on title page. Copyright page dated 1955. 398 pages. Clean throughout. This copy has the previous ownership name of Charles E. Wood on the front endpaper. Wood was Wood was a curator at Amherst and likely overlapped with Brower there. Dobzhansky was an influential geneticist, known for his writings (and work) on evolution, which he began with insects but expanded (controversially) to humans. He signed very little. We've got a wonderful bookshelf of books from Lincoln Brower's collection listed here in our Brower catalogue. Everything you know about Monarch Butterflies, you know because of Brower's work, both scientific and outreach. He was a great teacher, an important researcher, a torch-bearing conservationist, and a leading light in lepidoptery. We are extremely excited to offer his books.
