The magazine, founded by bookseller Albert Hoffmann and acclaimed writer David Kalish, was published between 1848 and 1944 and focussed on political satire, through articles [especially Ernst Dohm and Rudolf Lowenstein] and caricatures [especially Willhelm Scholz]. Especially of importance is the first year of its publishing [this copy], since it refers to the events of the 1848- revolution in Germany, where the first German parliament, the "Frankfurter Nationalversammlung" was founded at Paulskirche, Frankfurt. The first issue in 1848 was sold out on publication date. 4to. 3/4 vellum over black paper covered boards, with special issue and complete 32 editions of the first publication year bound in.
