Prima edizione Copia autografata
First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the photographer on the half title, "for Terry, thanks for your help, Chris, Mar 88". Terry Morden was curator at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, Bradford, now the National Science and Media Museum and had organized a Killip show in early 1988 titled Another Country. In Flagrante, Killip's "subjective book about my time in England" during its "de-industrialisation" (Killip's preface) is one of the greatest photobooks of the late 20th century, "a dark, pessimistic journey, perhaps even a secret odyssey, where rigorous documentary is suffused with a contemplative inwardness, a rare quality in modern photography" (Gerry Badger). Killip has chosen for the book's epigraph Yeats's poem, "He wishes for the cloths of Heaven", with the famous closing lines, "tread softly because you tread on my dreams", a choice which Berger & Grant, in their essay, describe as "searingly apt. for it is as if all the photos here have been branded, like a hundred cattle, with the tenderness of those eight lines." Parr & Badger II, 299. Quarto. Original wrappers, lettering to front cover and spine in black. Illustrated throughout with full pagr photographs by Killip. A near fine copy.

Libro Prima edizione
A first edition, first printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1988. Large 4to. (12 x 10 inches). Publisher's black cloth, title stamped in blind - a nice, clean copy. Pictorial dust wrapper is not price-clipped (£20.00). A very good copy in a like dust wrapper. Uncommon in hardback. The book is a collection of black and white photographs that document the decline of industry and the economic hardships faced by working-class communities in the north of England during the 1970s and 1980s. The title, "In Flagrante," suggests a sense of capturing these communities and individuals in the midst of their struggles. The photographs in the book provide a raw and poignant depiction of the social and economic changes that took place in this region, particularly in areas heavily reliant on industries like coal mining and steel production. Killip's images reveal the impact of de-industrialisation, unemployment, and social disintegration on the people and landscapes of these communities. "In Flagrante" is considered a significant documentary work that highlights the human stories behind the economic decline of the time.

Libro Prima edizione Copia autografata
First edition, a presentation copy inscribed to Hilary Gerrard on the half-title; black-and-white photographs printed in offset, text by John Berger and Sylvia Grant; black endpapers, black cloth-covered boards, upper side lettered in blind, spine lettered in silver, bowed, photo-illustrated dust-jacket printed in cream, text in black, toned; near-fine in an excellent dust-jacket; [viii], 96pp. Presentation copy inscribed to Hilary Gerrard, Ringo Starr's manager for over thirty years and a director of The Beatles company Apple Corps.:'To Hilary / With love! / Chris Killip'. These photographs show the effects of the decline of traditional British industry on the people living and working in and around Newcastle upon Tyne. Killip has said that he tried to make it evident from the outset that photographs are not to be trusted and that he wanted 'people to be conscious of the subjective nature of photography. As his introduction states, 'the objective history of England doesn't amount to much if you don't believe in it, and I don't, and I don't believe that anyone in these photographs does either as they face the reality of de-industrialisation in a system which regards their lives as disposable. The book is a fiction about metaphor. To which John Berger adds in the afterword: 'Fiction, I think. Because it is a story, not just information. About a human tragedy not an acci-dent. Metaphor because it is through metaphor that, at first and last, we seek for meaning.'
