India is a regional power, a nascent global power and a potential superpower. India has a growing international influence and a prominent voice in global affairs. After India gained Independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, it strongly supported independence movements in other colonies. Jawaharlal Nehru, India s first Prime Minister, was the architect of India s foreign policy. During the Cold War, India adopted a foreign policy of not aligning itself with any major power bloc. However, India developed close ties with the Soviet Union and received extensive military support from it. The end of the Cold War significantly affected India s foreign policy, as it did for much of the world. In the post-Cold War era, a significant aspect of India s foreign policy is the Look East Policy launched in 1992. India s growing economy, strategic location, and a large and vibrant Diaspora have won it more allies and partners. India has friendly relations with several countries in the developing world. The foreign policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi indicates a shift towards focusing on the Asian region and, more broadly, trade deals. This volume contains 9 research articles, authored by scholars in the field of political science, international relations, comparative politics, economics, security studies and political economy. These contributions provide useful material to understand contemporary dynamics of India s foreign policy and diplomacy.…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. During the first two decades of the twenty-first century, besides the structural factors namely geography, history, politics, international system and the world order, five conjunctural factors dominated Turkish foreign policy behaviour and conduct. These include the Strategic Depth (Stratejik Derinlik) doctrine with 'zero-problem' with neighbours embedded in it followed by the Blue Homeland (Mavi Vatan) doctrine focused on enhancing Türkiye's maritime presence in its immediate neighbourhood and the periphery. Thirdly, and arguably the most important, is the personality of Recep Tayyip Erdogan who as a dominating figure in contemporary Turkish politics has shaped not only the political discourse but foreign policy praxis. Erdogan's personalised style of interventions has undoubtedly had a profound impact on Ankara's interactions and engagements with the wider world. Finally, pan-Islamism and neo-Ottomanism are two important drivers in Turkish foreign policy and were visible notably in the Middle East and North Africa region and came into prominence in the wake of the Arab Spring uprisings. In this context, it is pertinent to ask what are Turkish foreign policy ambitions and how do these impact India? Given that Ankara has expanded its presence, or at least is striving to expand it, in the geographically contiguous Southwest Asia region that connects India to the Middle East, the question how Indian foreign policy should view Türkiye becomes even more important. The bilateral challenges between India and Türkiye make it even more pertinent for Indian scholars and policymakers to take a deep and hard look at Türkiye's foreign policy doctrines and praxis. This book is an attempt in that direction. It systematically analyses the structural and conjunctural factors in Turkish foreign policy and notes that Türkiye's foreign policy is embedded in a glorified identification of the past, both Ottoman and Kemalist, and in its geographical location as a multi-regional actor.…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated (Second Raisina Dialogue, New Delhi, on 17th January 2017)that the civilisational legacy of 'Realism, Co-existence, Cooperation and Partnership' moulded India's strategic vision. The above statement reflects India's ambitious project to attain great power status, which has been a constant element in India's foreign and strategic policy since its independence. The quest for great power status is a shared belief and behaviour. Moreover, Prime Minister Modi has been continuing, at a fast pace, with the reforms initiated in 1991 by Prime Minister Narasimha Rao and pursued by his immediate predecessors. We can notice in Narendra Modi's approach of 'strategic interconnectedness' or 'multi-vectored engagement' or panchamrit a continuity that aligns perfectly with the policies of his immediate predecessors. At the dawn of independence, the non-alignment approach facilitated liberal capitalist economic development with socialist flavours on an upward trajectory. Narasimha Rao rehabilitated India into the orbit of neoliberal political and financial architecture. Modi's objective is to take India into the league of leading countries in the multipolar world order through his Multivectored Alignment. There exists a symbiotic relationship between foreign policy strategy and domestic economic growth. Modi's Make in India project, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and similar initiatives constructed on multi-vectored alignment or strategic interconnectedness have given India unprecedented visibility worldwide. This book is a collection of essays penned by a few established scholars in the field and budding scholars under the guidance of established scholars. One retired diplomat and one retired Vice -Admiral, contributed each piece, rooted in their own experiences. The attempt is to comprehensively analyse India's strategic culture, doctrine, and foreign policy behaviour.…

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Indo-Pacific has become the pivot of the global politics and the salience of the region is bound to increase in the foreseeable future. India`s profile has rapidly grown since the end of Cold War and now India is being considered an important country in shaping the power equilibrium within the Indo-Pacific in particular and at the global level in general. The security architecture has remained turbulent in the region and in this prevailing scenario India has the golden opportunity to maximize its national interests. The phenomenal rise of China in the region and its diverging interests with India and many other important countries within the region have further complicated the security situation. India had a coalition government from 1989 till 2014. The 2014 General elections have given a thumping majority to Modi-led BJP. This government has performed excellently on the foreign policy front in its first tenure and has contributed as a motivating factor in the return of Modi government with a bigger majority in May 2019. At this juncture, India needs to reformulate its policies to cope up with the emerging situation. PM Modi is considered a strong leader and has adopted a pro-active foreign policy. But now, India has to reformulate its foreign policy in a structural manner to cope up with changing global power structure. It offers both challenges and opportunities to the Narendra Modi led NDA-3 government.…
