Harriett Pullman, daughter of George and Harriet (Hattie) Pullman, was born in Chicago in 1869. In 1892, she married San Franciscan Francis Carolan, and they established their home in Burlingame, CA. Harriett's father died in 1897, making her an heiress to his railway car fortune. Harriett established a second home in Paris around 1900, having long been fascinated with France's artistic heritage. During World War I, she became active in the American Friends of France, an organization advocating U.S. involvement in the war. She served as Director of the Fine Arts Department of the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Harriett, a bibliophile, planned her splendid Carolands Library to share her passion for books and learning. Harriett was admired for her distinctive and beautiful clothing. She collected and preserved many examples made by the finest Parisian couturiers of her day. Harriett married Colonel Arthur Schermerhorn in New York in 1925. Arthur died in 1933, leaving Harriett a widow for the second time. Having no children of her own, she left most of her possessions to her late sister's children, hence is authorized auction. Dr. C. Phillip Miller Jr. made major medical contributions in the field of bacteriology and the immunology of infectious diseases, was one of the original members of the University of Chicago medical school faculty. In 1950, he led the research team that found streptomycin, the most effective antibiotic in the treatment of usually fatal infections that follow heavy doses of radiation from X-rays or nuclear explosions. In 1931, he married Florence Lowden, the daughter of Frank O. Lowden, governor of Illinois during World War I and the granddaughter of George M. Pullman. An ébéniste (pronounced [ebenist]) is a cabinet-maker, particularly one who works in ebony. The term is a loanword from French and translates to "ebonist". Ébénistes make case furniture, either veneered or painted. Under Parisian guild regulations, painted varnishes, generically called vernis Martin, were applied in separate workshops, sawdust being an enemy to freshly varnished surfaces. During the French Revolution the guilds in Paris and elsewhere were abolished (1791), and with them went all their regulations. Jacob Petit (1796-1865) was one of the most famous porcelain artists of the 19th century. This is a sales catalog, describing each piece in a paragraph of detail, from a free public exhibition and auction. Parke-Bernet Galleries was an American auction house, active from 1937 to 1964, when Sotheby's purchased it. The company was founded by a group of employees of the American Art Association, including Otto Bernet, Hiram H. Parke, Leslie A. Hyam, Lewis Marion and Mary Vandergrift. By 1964, the company was the largest auction house in America, with 115 employees and total sales of $11 million ($108 million in 2023). That year, Sotheby's purchased a controlling interest of 75% in the gallery for $1.5 million ($15 million in 2023). The company was founded in 1937, by a group of forty former employees of the American Art Association, including Otto Bernet, Hiram H. Parke, Leslie A. Hyam, Lewis Marion and Mary Vandergrift. In January 1938, the first auction was held in a gallery at 742 Fifth Avenue. The next year, the company took over the American Art Association-Anderson Galleries, consisting of the American Art Association and the Anderson Galleries (formerly Anderson Auction Company). Parke-Bernet oversaw the sale of the estate of Georges Lurcy, a prominent art collector, whose estate included works by Raoul Dufy, Alfred Sisley and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The collection sold for over 2 million pounds in 1957, a record. Other cus.
