Condizione: Good. In the spirit of Steve Jobs and Moneyball, Elon Musk is both an illuminating and authorized look at the extraordinary life of one of Silicon Valley's most exciting, unpredictable, and ambitious entrepreneurs--a real-life Tony Stark--and a fascinating exploration of the renewal of American invention and its new makers.Elon Musk spotlights the technology and vision of Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur and innovator behind SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity, who sold one of his Internet companies, PayPal, for $1.5 billion. Ashlee Vance captures the full spectacle and arc of the genius's life and work, from his tumultuous upbringing in South Africa and flight to the United States to his dramatic technical innovations and entrepreneurial pursuits.Vance uses Musk's story to explore one of the pressing questions of our age: can the nation of inventors and creators who led the modern world for a century still compete in an age of fierce global competition? He argues that Musk--one of the most unusual and striking figures in American business history--is a contemporary, visionary amalgam of legendary inventors and industrialists including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Howard Hughes, and Steve Jobs. More than any other entrepreneur today, Musk has dedicated his energies and his own vast fortune to inventing a future that is as rich and far-reaching as the visionaries of the golden age of science-fiction fantasy.Thorough and insightful, Elon Musk brings to life a technology industry that is rapidly and dramatically changing by examining the life of one of its most powerful and influential titans.…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. HISTORY EDUCATION IS IN DECLINE because it fails to provide knowledge useful in the future as other school subjects do. This book calls on history teachers to restore the power of historical learning. Education exists to impart knowledge useful in the future. School subjects other than history identify general principles derived from their subject matter that describe how the world works, principles that can be applied in the future such as addition in mathematics, grammar in language, and gravity in science. These disciplines pass on their general principles to teachers who pass on this knowledge to students. Historians, however, concentrate on describing events of the past. Without general principles to impart, history teachers are left to recount one-time bygone events, most of which have little or no relevance to the present and future. Without principles useful in the future, history is unable to fulfill the purpose of education the way other school subjects do; society has no practical means to learn from the past; and the cycle of historical ignorance can perpetuate indefinitely. Educators commonly try to compensate for history schooling's lack of knowledge useful in the future by emphasizing skills knowledge instead: critical thinking skills or the job skills of professional historians. Other school subjects also have their critical thinking skills and professional practices, but in these other disciplines general principles constitute the foundation of learning because knowledge of how the world works is a necessary prerequisite to critical thinking. In history education that prerequisite is missing. The truth is, history has been supplying humans with useful principles of knowledge for at least 2,400 years, since the time of Thucydides in Greece and Sun Tzu in China. In earlier times, history could involve more than the act of describing past events; it could involve the ambition to derive from events principles useful in the future, an ambition that the history profession has largely abandoned. This loss deprives historical learning of the power possessed by other intellectual disciplines. If historians wish to concentrate on the role of describing events of the past, that's their business. Then the task of providing knowledge useful in the future falls to history educators, because that's their business.FUNDAMENTALS OF FUTURE-FOCUSED HISTORY TEACHING INCLUDEFive basic principles of history educationA coherent and useful purpose to guide instructionFour kinds of historical knowledge relevant to the futureCriteria for weighing the importance of historical eventsFour essential cognitive learning strategies Author Maxwell believes that Future-Focused History Teaching has the potential to restore to historical learning the power that it once held but has since lost; to return history to its rightful place of prominence among the fundamental realms of knowledge taught in school and college; and to provide important knowledge of how the world works that can help students and society to function effectively in the future.Note: This book is not a classroom teaching guide with a collection of handy lesson plans. This book deals with fundamental premises and practices that underlie the work of every history teacher from grade school through graduate school.…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. Oil is the problem. Cars are the solution. Those two simple sentences by the authors of Zoom define the scope of their illuminating and important book, an examination of a transformation in business and culture that is occurring before our eyes. We are living in the midst of a Great Awakening. People are seeking environmentally-sound alternatives to gas guzzlers. Detroit's reign is over. Oil companies, despite their billion-dollar profits, could be on the brink of extinction if they don't adapt. And citizens, all too aware that these industries have lobbied politicians into gridlock over energy policy, are mobilizing to support leaders who advocate new policies. In Zoom, Iain Carson and Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran, award-winning correspondents for The Economist, show why and how geopolitical and economic forces are compelling the linked industries of oil and autos to change as never before. Drawing on years of industry research-including dozens of interviews with motor and energy executives, top policymakers, and latter-day Fords and Edisons-Carson and Vaitheeswaran explain: -How Toyota became the world's largest automaker through innovation and superior performance. -Why American politicians have, for decades failed to address our energy issues and global warming-and how grassroots movements, along with individual entrepreneurs, innovators, and outsiders, are making real reform possible.-How these Green revolutionaries are creating new products powered by hydrogen, electricity, bio-fuels, and digital technology. As political leaders debate our energy, environmental and economic future, Zoom offers a lucid and visionary portrait of what that future could be. Anyone planning to vote will find compelling truth in its assertions and conclusions.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Here's what you'll learn in this book: Ch 1 How social media can hurt your kid's future Ch 2 Common social media mistakes made Ch 3 What social media posts and strategies impress colleges Ch 4 What social media posts and strategies impress future employers Ch 5 Social networks that help you shine online Ch 6 How and when to privatize your image Ch 7 How to talk to your kids Ch 8 How to make a plan together Ch 9 Case studies from successful students making a difference Over the past several years, I have had the great opportunity to work with some of the world's best brands. My staff and I developed and implemented techniques to help these companies shine online. And they have By employing a few social media strategies, these great companies are finding the customers they want and deserve. It quickly came to my attention that my techniques would be valuable to families who are preparing their kids for college. Many kids have no idea how their digital footprint might be viewed by others and how others' perceptions can hold them back. During a 2013 Kaplan telephone questionnaire, 31% of college admissions officers said that they did visit applicants Facebook and other social media pages to gain more information on the student. 30% said that they had encountered information on social media that had a negative influence on an applicant's chance of being accepted. This goes to show that anything we put online, no matter how long ago, can be brought up on the first page of Google results and we need to be vigilant on what we allow others to see.1 In this book, you will receive the same strategies I've used to help many successful companies, but tailored to students and future leaders, to help them impress colleges and future employers. As I've traveled the country for the past year and spoken to over 20,000 students, the feedback has been clear: these methods work, helping kids convey their best selves online. These methods employed keep their online images and communications Light, Bright and Polite(R), which allows colleges and employers find the best people to represent their campus upon graduation. Your kid can be among them. It's a competitive market out there, so let's not be disqualified from something to which you're aspiring without ever having a real chance at interviewing for the opportunity It is never too early to start planning ahead. Your kids may not be thinking about it, but certainly you understand from experience that what you do now can have lasting effects. At the very least, what you do now lays the foundation for the habits that you will have years from now. Even if your children are not on social media yet, their reputation online starts as soon as their friends are online and posting photos of them, tagging them. So, there's a lot to consider Since parents have limited time, this book isn't designed to teach everything about social media. I'm not here to give you a list of 100 things not to do on social media. Instead, my goal is to have students and parents skim through this book and be able to pick up one or two helpful tips that can make all the difference. What accomplishments does your kid want to have in the next five years? - Getting into college - Full ride scholarship - Varsity sports team - Study abroad opportunity - Leadership award - Community service - Getting into a prestigious private high school - Getting the perfect internship that launches their career If any of these apply, then you need to pay attention to all of the messages that your child sends out on social media. There's a good chance that 50% of their tweets might not be helping them to reach their goals. They need to be vigilant. Josh Ochs @JoshOchs.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Tina Modotti, known to a few as the beautiful Italian actress in Erich von Stroheim's silent film Greed, was also a dedicated political activist and a photographer whose best work has a powerful dignity and integrity. She lived with Edward Weston in postrevolutionary Mexico in the 1920s. During the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, she was a nurse in Madrid and on various fronts. In Spain she knew Antonio Machado and Pablo Neruda, who wrote a poem about her after her death in Mexico in 1942. Margaret Gibson's Memories of the Future is based on Modotti's vivid but enigmatic life. Drawn from daybooks that Gibson imagines Modotti to have kept at the end of her life in Mexico City, these poems give us the reflections of a woman whose intensity and vision, evident in her own photographs, are matched by the depth and breadth of her experience and personal transformation in times of deep social and political upheaval.…
