Hard Cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Printing. Second printing. Former library copy. No jacket. Front free endpaper removed. 1943 Hard Cover. xv, 685 pp. Maisie Ward's biography of Gilbert Keith Chesterton has long been a cornerstone in Chesterton studies, as well as in the publishing house she and her husband, Frank Sheed, founded in 1926. Originally published in 1942, just six years after Chesterton's untimely death, this book combines Ward's unique perspective as the author's friend and publisher with an examination of his personal correspondence and interviews with his closest friends and family. Here are Chesterton's childhood and school days, the friendship and foolery of youth, his early theological development, high spirited love letters, the variety and richness of his travel and life abroad, his lectures, his writings, and his indominable spirit.
Hardcover, no dust jacket. First UK edition. Edge-worn and scuffed cover, upper board edge dented, sound otherwise. 685 pp.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. First Edition. Cloth, no dj, spine dark, 8 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches, xv, 685 clean pp., several illustrations, tight. Sullivan 782. Mary Josephine "Maisie" Ward Sheed (1889-1975), b. Shanklin, Isle of Wight; d. Jersey City, NJ. Her brother, Leo Ward, was one half of the publishing firm Sheed & Ward. Maisie took his place in the business after he left to enter the Catholic priesthood. She was a Red Cross nurse during WWI, and an author and public speaker on Catholic themes after the war. She was a personal friend to Gilbert Keith Chesterton, and Chesterton's widow asked her to write this biography. She gives great insights into the thinking and writing of GKC, as well as observations that could only come from a publisher's point of view.Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936), English journalist whose works include nearly all forms of written expression, including essays, novels, short stories, poems, plays, biography, and literary criticism. A Christian thinker, he sounded some of the earliest warnings against the tyranny of the modern state, and lamented the loss of wonder & beauty in modern life.
