The robust transportation network of automobile roads (divided into 'good' and 'fair), steam railroads, steamship routes, and electric railways is highlighted across the eastern and western parts of the island, with the former including large portions of New York City. Inset maps show continuations along the North and South Shores, while a group of three strip maps are accompanied by a city index and mileage chart affixed to the front cover. Throughout the primary image, the majority of the roads are labeled, highlighting a haphazard system of named trails prior to the implementation of numbered highways. Other toponyms reflect an interesting mix of towns, geographic features, and locations of interest. This is particularly relevant for fans of F. Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby, published in 1925. In October of 1922, Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, moved to Great Neck, Long Island, and began socializing with the local elite through his connections as a novelist.
