Wir haben die angeführte Reihenfolge der Säugetierordnungen, wie sie auf Grund neuester Forschungen aufgestellt ist, bei unserer Beschreibung beibehalten, obwohl wir uns nicht verhehlen, dass nach der Bedeutung des Zentralnervensystems eine wesentlich andere Platz greifen müsste. In jeder der betreffenden Ordnungen wurde das Gehirn und Rückenmark einzelner Tiere so ausführlich wie möglich beschrieben, um damit zuerst den Grundbau des Gehirns dieser Tierordnung zu veranschaulichen; die Tiere aus derselben oder anderen Familien dieser Ordnung wurden der vorangegangenen genaueren Darstellung in kürzerer Form zur Ergänzung hinzugefügt. Stets wurden dabei auch die Untersuchungsergebnisse anderer Forscher, soweit sie uns zugänglich waren, berücksichtigt und mitunter in einzelnen speziellen Tabellen mit den unsrigen zusammengefasst.'
