In computingAdvanced Program to Program Communication or APPC is a protocol whichcomputer programs can use t…o communicate over a network. APPC is at theapplication layer in the OSI model, it enables communications betweenprograms on different computers, from portables and workstations tomidrange and host computers. APPC was developed as a component of IBMsSystems Network Architecture or SNA. Several APIs were developed forprogramming languages such as COBOL or REXX. APPC software is availablefor many different IBM and non-IBM operating systems, either as part ofthe operating system or as a separate software package. APPC serves as atranslator between application programs and the network. When anapplication on your computer passes information to the APPC softwareAPPC translates the information and passes it to a network interfacesuch as a LAN adapter card. The information travels across the networkto another computer, where the APPC software receives the informationfrom the network interface.
