Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj) George Salter (illustratore). First Edition. [a very nice copy, with just a touch of wear to the base of the spine, vintage bookseller's label (The Village Book Shop, Carmel, Calif.) on rear pastedown; the jacket is equally nice, just lightly age-toned, with a touch of wear at the corners]. "Only a few miles from over-publicized Bali in the South Seas is the Dutch colony of Java, a colorful island teeming with a population of almost forty million people. [The author] came to this island as a casual visitor. He was fascinated, and before long learned to love it -- loved it so much that he stayed and was impelled to write a rich and tender novel about it. Into the story of Ajoks, the almost fabulous youth with the soul of a great artist who reaches heights that few of his race have ever attained, Fowler has woven much of the strange and beautiful folklore of the Javanese people.".

First edition, first printing. Fowler's only full-length novel, Illusion in Java is a surreal and feverish fable exploring of escapism and moral dislocation in the interwar world interwoven with the strange and beautiful folklore of the Javanese people. A wonderful association copy inscribed from Fowler to Nat "Gimlet Eye" Deverich. Deverich was a fellow denizen of the early Hollywood literary circuit and one-time colleague at the Selznick agency. A remarkable association between two behind-the-scenes figures of American letters and film, capturing a moment of literary ambition before Fowler fully transitioned to screenwriting and biography. Lightly rubbed extremities, overall near fine in fine, spine-toned dust jacket, in mylar cover. Brown, cream, and maroon patterned cloth, top stain red, in George Salter dust jacket ($2.50).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Poor. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing (stated). Director John Ford's copy with a gift inscription SIGNED by Gene Fowler: "To Man Against Fate John Ford, With the best, Gene Fowler/Oct. 1939." The book was published in October 1939. Fowler weaves the folklore of the Javanese people in this "rich and tender" novel set in the Dutch colony of Java. "An ultra-rarified book, and quite a departure for Gene Fowler, this story of a Javanese music-maker, Ajoks, and his semi-legendary experiences, told in the symbolistic, metaphorical idiom of the people."--Kirkus Reviews. This is one of many interesting books we acquired from John Ford's estate.
