Paperback. Condizione: Good. Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 3,3 (1,3), University of Paderborn (Institut f r Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: It's 'the end of the world' as we know it: The Apocalypse and other End-of-the-World Narratives, language: English, abstract: In this essay I'd like to take a look at social interactions of individuals who find themselves in a world where known values, believes and rules seem to be invalid and where the individual survival seems to be the only aim to strive for. But is survival the only need of people? The Road, with its cold, bitter and ashen world, where ethics and morale are lost, where society, as we know it, is completely absent is a good basis for this research. Maybe you'll be good at this. I doubt it, but who knows. The one thing I can tell you is that you won't survive for yourself. I know because I would never have come this far. A person who had no one would be well advised to cobble together some passable ghost. Breathe it into being and coax it along with words of love. Offer it each phantom crumb and shield it from harm with your body. (McCarthy, The Road) Action is rational in so far as it pursues ends possible within the conditions of the situation, and by means, which, among those available to the actor, are intrinsically best adapted to the end for reasons(.). (Parsons, 1937) These two epigraphs, the first from Cormac McCarthy's The Road and the second from Parsons Structure of Social Action give us a slight hint about the importance of social relations and interactions and their outcomes. As a consumer of this kind of post-apocalyptic media you're thrown into these settings by either waking up from a dream or by regaining consciousness. The setting and the new world order are already fixed. Either people try to survive for their own while searching and hoping for others in order to have a higher chance of surviving, or they are already a part of a community whi. …

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. From world premieres with Leonard Bernstein to a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration with Frank Sinatra at Madison Square Garden, Splendid Encounters offers a glimpse into two of the century's most exciting decades of classical music. Renowned choral conductor Abraham Kaplan provides a fascinating look at his association with more than forty talented musicians who touched his life with their genius and accomplishments. In some instances, Kaplan crossed paths with these musicians momentarily, and in other cases, he had the privilege of working intimately with some of the world's great maestros. In all, Kaplan collaborated with twenty-eight world-renowned conductors, nine internationally famous composers, and other celebrated personalities-from William Schuman to Igor Stravinsky and Vincent Persichetti-whose vignettes are delivered in this compilation. Splendid Encounters, stories of great musicians told by a great musician and storyteller, is both infectious and inspirational, and demonstrates that these legendary musicians are indeed real human beings. This music biography revives the living, breathing experiences of a generation of musical legends who should not be forgotten.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Global Interactions in the Early Modern Age is an interdisciplinary introduction to cross-cultural encounters in the early modern age (1400-1800) and their influences on the development of world societies. In the aftermath of Mongol expansion across Eurasia, the unprecedented rise of imperial states in the early modern period set in motion interactions between people from around the world. These included new commercial networks, large-scale migration streams, global biological exchanges, and transfers of knowledge across oceans and continents. These in turn wove together the major regions of the world. In an age of extensive cultural, political, military, and economic contact, a host of individuals, companies, tribes, states, and empires were in competition. Yet they also cooperated with one another, leading ultimately to the integration of global space.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. "I think that the coverage of the text is excellent. It carves out a seriously neglected area and it very thoroughly covers the topic. The authors are very knowledgeable concerning the literature. This is an excellent text that provides a detailed, yet comprehensible account of how to estimate, test, and probe interactions in regression models." --David A. Kenny, University of Connecticut "Leona S. Aiken and Stephen G. West do an excellent job of structuring, testing, and interpreting multiple regression models containing interactions, curvilinear effects, or a combination of both. Procedures for testing and graphical displays of interactions between categorical variables have been done for years but none seems to have provided a comprehensive treatment or guideline for the analysis of interactions between continuous variables. . . . Aiken and West, however, address those issues quite effectively and thoroughly. . . . An aid to any graduate and/or researcher in their analysis of continuous variables. Highly recommended for graduate libraries." --Choice "The book would serve very well as a reference for applied researchers and methodologists. . . . In particular, this would be an excellent reference for anyone who encounters a multivariable prediction problem and has reason to believe that either a nonlinear model or a model including a variable product term would be appropriate." --Contemporary Psychology Researchers in a variety of disciplines frequently encounter problems in which interactions are predicted between two or more continuous variables. However, the current literature regarding how to analyze, interpret, and present interactions in multiple regression has been confusing. In this comprehensive volume, Leona S. Aiken and Stephen G. West provide academicians and researchers with a clear set of prescriptions for estimating, testing, and probing interactions in regression models. Including the latest research in the area, such as Fuller?s work on the corrected/constrained estimator, the book is appropriate for anyone who uses multiple regression to estimate models or for those enrolled in courses on multivariate statistics.…
