Carnap è stato un filosofo, logico tedesco naturalizzato statunitense (nel 1941). Fu membro del Circolo di Vienna ed influente esponente del neopositivismo. Il tentativo di valorizzare logiche non intensionali portò alla sua pubblicazione di "The Introduction of Semantics" (1942), un'opera ristretta alla logica esclusivamente estensionale, così come il volume successivo, "Formalization of Semantics" (1943). Tuttavia, è poi tornato a considerare le logiche non estensionali in "Meaning and Necessity" (Significato e necessità).
