3 diagrams 1956 unabridged and unaltered republication (1st translation in English was 1926) Book condition, Etat : Bon paperback, editor's green printed wrappers, illustrated by red squares In-8 1 vol. - 129 pages Contents, Chapitres : Preface, Contents, vii, Text, 122 pages - On the movement of small particles suspended in a stationary liquid demanded by the molecular-kinetic theory of heat - On the theory of the Brownian movement - A new determination of molecular dimensions - Theoretical observations on the Brownian motion - Elementary theory of the Brownian motion - Notes and index - This motion is named after the botanist Robert Brown, who first described the phenomenon in 1827, while looking through a microscope at pollen of the plant Clarkia pulchella immersed in water. In 1905, almost eighty years later, theoretical physicist Albert Einstein published a paper where he modeled the motion of the pollen particles as being moved by individual water molecules, making one of his first major scientific contributions. This explanation of Brownian motion served as convincing evidence that atoms and molecules exist and was further verified experimentally by Jean Perrin in 1908. Perrin was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1926 "for his work on the discontinuous structure of matter". The direction of the force of atomic bombardment is constantly changing, and at different times the particle is hit more on one side than another, leading to the seemingly random nature of the motion. (source : Wikipedia) wrappers very lightly yellowing else fine, inside is near fine, no markings, very few foxings on first and last pages, a rather nice copy - Dover Edition 150.

Prima edizione
First edition in English, first impression, of this collection of five papers that led to the confirmation of the atomic nature of matter. The papers were originally published in Annalen der Physik and Zeitschrift für Elektrochemie between 1905 and 1911. This translation was published the year that Jean Baptiste Perrin (1870-1942) won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work verifying Einstein's investigations. The phenomenon of the random movement of particles suspended in a fluid was first observed in the modern era by Robert Brown in 1827. Einstein's detailed theoretical treatments expanded on these observations; he "developed the formulae for the displacement of Brownian particles and their diffusion rates based on the kinetic theory of molecules [and] considered the instantaneous velocity of a Brownian particle" (Wenner, p. 369). This provided the basis for Perrin's experiments, which "verified Einstein's formulae so conclusively that [he] largely settled the century-long dispute about the existence of atoms" (ibid., p. 370). The collection was first published in German in 1922. The English edition is also encountered with gilt lettering on the spine and publisher's advertisements at the rear of the text. This jacket differs from both the UK and US editions; the usual UK jacket is priced 5s., whereas the present jacket is priced 6s. No priority is established in Weil. Weil 129a. David Wenner, History of Physics, 2018. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in white. With dust jacket. Diagram within text. Cloth and contents clean, spine ends and corners bumped; unclipped jacket a little soiled and creased, spine browned, expert repair to folds and verso of spine, loss at spine ends affecting lettering at tail: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
