"From 1962 until 1977 Riefenstahl had been living as the first white woman with a special permission issued by the Sudanese government in the remote valleys of the central Sudan among the Nuba tribe. She studied their way of life and recorded it on film and in pictures. These picture documents hold a unique anthropological, ethnological, and cultural-historical importance due to the circumstances through which the Nuba's historical way of life is approaching its irreversible end, primarily through the advance of civilization." ?Publisher. // Photography, Anthropology, Ethnography, The Sudan, Nuba (African people) Nuba (African people) -- Pictorial works. Well away from trade routes, remote in the arid mountains of the central Sudan from the disruptions of alien cultures and the meretricious ideas of Western man, these fragile groups of noble men have clung to their traditional culture with a rare and stubborn devotion, which has so far preserved them from the Arabization of so many of the people of that vast, but sparsely inhabited, area. Over a period of ten years, Leni Riefenstahl has lived on and off with the Mesakin Nuba, sometimes for several months at a time. Here she presents her remarkable record of the everyday rhythms of life; of eating, sleeping, building, gathering food and taking their leisure; of the great cycles of birth, marriage and death; and of the remarkable central factor of their culture and religion: the wrestling contest. It is, alas, a commonplace to represent a tribal group, whose life has evolved in an inspired and intimate harmony with their environment, as being on the brink of extinction. For all their physical magnificence, the Mesakin Nuba are indeed a fragile stem of the human race. But there will be perhaps no people in the world doomed to extinction as an ethnic entity who will have been survived, for so long as our civilization lasts, by a more devoted record such as Leni Riefenstahl has brought out from Africa. It was during Gerrneny's blighted and momentous 1930's that Leni Riefenstahl sprang to international fame as a film director. She was born in 1902, and her first devotion was to creative dancing. This led to her participation in silent films, and soon she was herself making ~ and starring in~ her own talkies, such as The Mountain (1929). These tensely romantic productions were widely admired, not least by Adolf Hitler who, having attained power in 1933, commissioned Riefenstahl to make a documentary on the Nuremberg Rally in 1934. Riefenstahl's refusal to submit to Goebbels' attempt to subject her visualisation to his strictly propagandist requirements led to a battle of wills which came to a head when Riefenstahl made her film of the 1936 Olympic Games, Olympia. This, Goebbels attempted to destroy; and it was only saved by the personal intervention of Hitler. With two of the most remarkable documentaries of the 1930's to her credit, Riefenstahl continued making films of her devising, unconnected with the rise of Nazi Germany, until 1941, when war conditions made it impossible to continue. Her acquaintance with the Nazi leadership led to her arrest at the end of the Second World War: she was tried twice, and acquitted twice. Her reputation was in eclipse, and she was half forgotten~ although to a whole generation of Germans her name had been a household word. During the 1950's she turned from moving pictures to photography, in which she soon began to excel through her unique vision and perfectionism. In the noble tribesmen of the arid areas of eastern and n.
