Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Lily doesn't like change although it seems to follow her everywhere she goes: change of house, change of school, change of friends. She does a pretty good job at rejecting it every chance she gets, but when she stumbles upon an enchanted world full of crystal stone beaches, mermaids, and witches, everything moves faster than she can even perceive possible. And no one seems to be bothered by it She has two choices--stay in misery on her own, or learn how to surrender.Sa Neo is the enchanted world inside Lost Nowhere and it consists of seven different lands, each with their own ruler. As Lily explores the lands, she is taught the magical ways of the Sa Neo people, but it is the mermaids who rule underwater that Lily finds most compelling. The Princess Mermaid, Crysanthe, is fond of Lily also, and together they form an unbreakable bond. There is one rule though - Lily must keep the existence of the mermaids secret from the Sa Neo people, for such news of their existence could create a jealous rage, and worse, war. As Lily is exposed to unwelcome popularity, she is forced to juggle her secrets between the people of the land and the creatures of the sea. Conflicted with whom to trust, Lily quickly realizes that the world of Sa Neo is not as it seems, pushing her to quickly decipher who is real and what is not. Lost Nowhere is a poetic fantasy, woven with spirituality and magical realism, that will encourage readers to learn how to accept fate and love themselves.Lost Nowhere is a must-read for anyone who has questioned what life is and why we are here.Interview with Phoebe Garnsworthy, author of Lost Nowhere: The Epic Tale of Queens, Witches, Mermaids and Magic What inspired you to write Lost Nowhere ? My obsession with magic began as young as I can remember In middle grade I was enchanted with our own universe, the sun, the moon and the stars. By the time I reached my teenage years I had mastered white witch rituals, swam with mermaids and visited fairies in the garden. In my dreams, I travelled to unbelievable places, beyond my own imagination. My life danced in one never ending journey, full of spirituality, visionary and metaphysical supernatural synchronicity. I am in constant admiration for all the beauty and magic in our world, and I feel that people forget to see this. I wrote Lost Nowhere to remind everyone of how beautiful the world is. Yes there will always be good and bad, but we can choose to see the good and can inspire others to too. What kind of reader is going to like this book? Lost Nowhere is aimed at middle grade, teens and young adults who are coming of age and have a keen interest in epic fantasy books. The reader must be willing to journey with me into an unknown world where queens and witches rule the land and mermaids rule the seas. Neither are aware of each others existence, and are therefore threatened of one another's power. It is relevant to today as misunderstanding often leads to fear and battles of the ego. I invite my readers to learn about themselves in this safe haven, where you will question everything you have ever known about life and humanity and will see the world in a more positive light. Perhaps you have noticed changes in yourself and those around you or that your world is not as you thought it was. Here I address those issues, and help you understand why you think this way. But in a fun fantasy world where Queens, Witches, Magical Sorcerers, Mermaids and Fairies will guide you as your teacher.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Born just after World War I, Judith Fisher had a seemingly normal childhood, but beneath the veneer of middle-class normalcy, her mother battled depression, migraines, and addiction to prescription pain relievers. By the time Judith was ten, her mom had suffered three nervous breakdowns and had had a number of electroshock treatments. In an attempt to gain control over her own troubled life, she maintained strict control over her daughter's every action, forging a bond that was highly manipulative and, at the same time, loving. By age fourteen, young Judith had absorbed all the stresses of a dysfunctional family life and was desperate for a way out. She attempted suicide, but survived. A year later, she departed for a New England boarding school, a welcome relief from her troubled home, and a hope for recovery. In her senior year, however, through a series of misfortunes and betrayals, Judith's parents had her incarcerated in a mental hospital for seven months; there she was subjected to twenty-seven electroshock treatments and an attempted rape. Somehow, she lived through these appalling abuses and managed to escape being locked up permanently.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. I died one summer, or I almost did. Part of me did. I don't say that to be dramatic, only because it's true. For the past nine years, Helena Waite has been returning to summer camp at Southpoint. Every year the camp and its familiar routines, landmarks, and people have welcomed her back like a long-lost family member. But this year she is returning not as a camper, but as a counselor, while her best friend, Katie Bell remains behind. All too quickly, Helena discovers that the innocent world of campfires, singalongs, and field days have been pushed aside for late night pranks on the boys' camp, skinny dipping in the lake, and stolen kisses in the hayloft. As she struggles to define herself in this new world, Helena begins to lose sight of what made camp special and the friendships that have sustained her for so many years. And when Ransome, her longtime crush, becomes a romantic reality, life gets even more confusing. Told with honesty and heart, Kathryn Williams' second novel tackles the timeless theme of growing up, set at a camp where innocence is created and lost.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. World-famous as the Queen of Spas, Saratoga Springs entered a golden age in the Victorian years and the world flocked to its doorstep every summer. The rich and famous rubbed elbows with a growing post-Civil War middle class popularizing a new concept, the summer vacation. They came ostensibly to take the waters at the bubbling mineral springs, but what they really came for was to see and be seen on the grand piazzas of the magnificent, colossal hotels that lined Saratoga's Broadway, and to share in the limelight of glittering balls and fabulous parties. The grace and opulence of America's Victorian era faded with the dawn of the twentieth century, and almost all of the buildings and views in this book have long since disappeared in clouds of dust from the wrecker's ball or in spectacular cataclysmic infernos, but in Saratoga Lost, Robert Joki takes the reader on a guided tour of that grand era with hundreds of historic photographs from the author's extraordinary private collection, complemented, by period artwork.…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. A young woman finds herself in the crosshairs of powerful and very dangerous enemies when she travels to Cairo to uncover the truth about her brother's mysterious death in this smart, atmospheric, and propulsive literary thriller from the acclaimed author of A Beautiful Crime and Orient "Bollen writes expansive, psychologically probing novels in the manner of Updike, Eugenides and Franzen, but he is also an avowed disciple of Agatha Christie."--Daily Telegraph (UK) When the lifeless body of Eric Castle, a weapons technician for a major American defense contractor, is found under his hotel balcony, both his employer and the Egyptian authorities quickly declare his death a suicide. But the dead man's sister, Cate, doesn't believe Eric took his own life and is determined to get to the truth. Traveling to Egypt she begins to piece together her brother's life in Cairo with the help of a handsome, young, gay Egyptian man named Omar, who yearns to escape the brutality of his nation's harsh, restrictive government. Unfortunately, Cate's quest raises more questions--and problems--than she ever imagined, as she takes on not only the arms company's top brass but the Egyptian military, secret police, and a slew of American expats with their own reasons to keep the dead buried once and for all. Soon she's in over her head, and it's not clear if either she or Omar will get out alive. This riveting thriller of set in loud, boisterous Cairo of Americans lost and found showcases Bollen's depth of characterization and haunting descriptive powers.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. The first book in a gripping new Ava Lee spin-off series featuring fan-favourite Uncle Chow Tung and his ascendancy to the head of the Triad gang in Fanling.Hong Kong, 1969. The Dragon Head of the Fanling Triad has died and there is a struggle to replace him among senior members of the gang. Normally, the Deputy Mountain Master is next in line, but this one is weak and ineffectual and has only survived because of the protection of the Dragon Head. Up to this point, the Fanling Triad has operated in relative isolation from neighbouring gangs, but the Dragon Head?s death has drawn attention to the area ? and to its wealth. Other gangs start to make threatening moves and it?s obvious to the senior members of the Fanling Triad that they need a leader who can fend off the threats, unite the membership, and maintain their prosperity. There are several candidates. The least conspicuous is the White Paper Fan, their young administrator. His name is Chow Tung, but many of those who work with him already refer to him as ?Uncle?.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. A noted neurologist challenges the widespread misunderstanding of brain disease and mental illness. How the Brain Lost Its Mind tells the rich and compelling story of two confounding ailments, syphilis and hysteria, and the extraordinary efforts to confront their effects on mental life. How does the mind work? Where does madness lie, in the brain or in the mind? How should it be treated? Throughout the nineteenth century, syphilis--a disease of mad poets, musicians, and artists--swept through the highest and lowest rungs of European society like a plague. Known as the Great Imitator, it could produce almost any form of mental or physical illness, and it would bring down a host of famous and infamous characters--among them Guy de Maupassant, Vincent van Gogh, the Marquis de Sade, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Al Capone. It was the first truly psychiatric disease and it filled asylums to overflowing. At the same time, an outbreak of bizarre behaviors resembling epilepsy, but with no identifiable source in the body, strained the diagnostic skills of the great neurologists. It was referred to as hysteria. For more than a century, neurosyphilis stood out as the archetype of a brain-based mental illness, fully understood but largely forgotten, and today far from gone. Hysteria, under many different names, remains unexplained and epidemic. These two conditions stand at opposite poles of the current debate over the role of the brain in mental illness. Hysteria led Freud to insert sex into psychology. Neurosyphilis led to the proliferation of mental institutions. The problem of managing the inmates led to the abuse of lobotomy and electroshock therapy, and ultimately the overuse of psychotropic drugs. Today we know that syphilitic madness was a destructive disease of the brain while hysteria and, more broadly, many varieties of mental illness reside solely in the mind. Or do they? Afflictions once written off as hysterical continue to elude explanation. Addiction, alcoholism, autism, ADHD, Tourette syndrome, depression, and sociopathy, though regarded as brain-based, have not been proven to be so. In these pages, the authors raise a host of philosophical and practical questions. What is the difference between a sick mind and a sick brain? If we understood everything about the brain, would we understand ourselves? By delving into an overlooked history, this book shows how neuroscience and brain scans alone cannot account for a robust mental life, or a deeply disturbed one.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good.
