A large part of the story concerns his trip West in a cozy TR-3 with Lila Caine, who answers, first, his advertisement for a driving companion, and then a few other questions, which Walker was not aware he'd asked. Soon they are spending more time in motels than on the road, but after a series of bizarre adventures and minor disasters, the sexual marathon ends in Mexico, where Walker, minus his car, finally comes to a decision. Michael Mewshaw displays a broad range of talents in leading his characters from experiences of low comedy to an aching recognition of the delusions of youth and freedom.
