The book includes a novel, a play that lends the book its title, as well as 39 stories and assorted pieces. Borchert wrote for only two years before his very young death at age 26. This issue has a new forward by Kay Boyle and an introduction by Stephen Spender. It is a Near Fine condition copy, marred only by a remainder marks at the top and bottom of the pages. The front endpaper is still uncut from the front cover. The price is inked out on the Near Fine condition dust jacket. This powerful group of works, told through the eyes of a former World War Two German soldier who is trying to cope with the two horrors: war and nazism. This book was included in David Madden's Rediscoveries, which notes critically acclaimed yet financially unsuccessful books that, therefore, are worthy of rediscovery.
