It is primarily used formultiphase simulations, because of the ease of detecting contact withoutinter-penetration. It can also be used as an alternative to dynamic FEMmethods to simulate large material deformations, because there is nore-meshing required by the MPM. In the MPM, Lagrangian point masses, ormaterial points, are moved through a Eulerian background mesh. At theend of each calculation cycle, a 'convective' step occurs, in which themesh is reset to its original position, while material points remain intheir current positions.
