From a private home collection (NOT x-lib). No dust jacket (none issued?). Binding is tight, sturdy, and square. Text and math also very good+. Rubbing to spine, some light sunning/discoloration to front board. Hardcover in very good- condition. Arnold Sommerfeld introduced the second quantum number, azimuthal quantum number, and the third quantum number, magnetic quantum number. He introduced the fine-structure constant and pioneered X-ray wave theory. He mentored seven Nobel Prize recipients and was nominated for the Nobel Prize 84 times, a record for physicists. Born in the final years of the Kingdom of Prussia, Sommerfeld attended university in Konigsberg (now Kaliningrad). Shortly after Hitler's rise to power he wrote Albert Einstein, "I can assure you that the misuse of the word ?national? by our rulers has thoroughly broken me of the habit of national feelings that was so pronounced in my case. I would now be willing to see Germany disappear as a power and merge into a pacified Europe." Other contributions include the Sommerfeld?Kossel displacement law (1919) and the developing of the free electron model (1927).
