Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. 1st Edition. As new condition black boards with red spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped photographic dust jacket. Includes Prologue, Notes, Bibliography, Illustration Credits, and Acknowledgments. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. "In the 1920's and '30's, Paul Rosenberg was among the most influential art dealers in Paris - a man known for his passion for modernist painting, his infallible eye, and his steadfast devotion to the artists he represented. His elegant skylit gallery at 21 rue La Boetie was arguably the epicenter of the Parisian avant-garde, a place where painters such as Picasso, Braque, Matisse, and Leger were routinely exhibited. But with the German occupation of France, the Galerie Rosenberg, was requisitioned as a Nazi propaganda office, the Institute for the Study of Jewish Questions. Improbably, Rosenberg's temple of beauty was turned into a storeroom of depravity. With his gallery piled to the rafters with work deemed "degenerate art" by the Nazis, Rosenberg and his family managed to flee Paris just ahead of the deportation of French Jews, first to Floirac, near Bordeaux, and then via Spain and Portugal to New York, with papers miraculously obtained by Rosenberg's friend Alfred Barr at the Museum of Modern Art. In his absence, the art dealer's reputaions was obliterated, and his beloved paintings - "children," as he called them - were looted and scattered across the continent, crimes in which even his concierge was complicit. Rosenberg's son, Alexandre, a member of the French Resistance, was the lieutenant who stopped a German train leaving Paris in August 1944 and discovered it was carrying works he had last seen on his parents' wall in 1939." "A rare look at a cultural luminary who became a pariah in his own country during the Second World War, Anne Sinclair's My Grandfather's Gallery is a moving portrait of a singular figure at a thrilling moment in art history. Sinclair's account draws on her grandfather's voluminous correspondence with Picasso - whom he called Pic and considered his spiritual brother - a fascinating archive of family papers, and her own experiences visiting galleries with her grandfather as a child. She discusses the personal and economic circumstances that compelled painters to join Rosenberg's exclusive stable, the trials of his marriage, and her family's ongoing effort to recover his paintings.".

1st translated ed. Paperback octavo, very good condition, black & white & sepia (brown-tinted) & few colour photos centre spread, bottom corner tip front cover creased, pages lightly toned, minor edgewear. 224 pp. Anne Sinclair relates the story of her grandfather, Paul Rosenberg. In September 1940, the famous European art dealer disembarked in New York, one of many Jewish refugees fleeing Vichy France. He left behind his beloved Paris gallery: he saved his family, but his paintings - masterpieces by Cezanne, Monet, Sisley and others - were seized by the Nazis and the art dealer's own legacy was obliterated. More than 50 years later, the author found a box of letters and she discovered who her mother's father really was. Drawing on his intimate correspondence with Picasso, Matisse, Braque and others, she traces the life of a legendary member of the Parisian art scene. The author both reframes 20th century art history and reclaims family history. (Translated from French.).
