Techniques of cholesteatoma surgery, and recent controversies surrounding them, are presented in this chapter. Surgical management is significantly influenced by knowledge of the various forms of cholesteatoma and their pathogenesis. This discussion takes into account the results of recent studies in molecular biology, with a focus on tailoring cholesteatoma surgery to the individual patient. Stapes surgery has a predictably high success rate in experienced hands with a very low incidence of complications. The indications for hearing aid implantation and the clinical results that have been reported so far are reviewed in this chapter.
