Aggiungi al carrelloA highly collectible antique sewing tool characterized by its intricate, openwork (or "ajour") design. These miniature cases - often referred to as an etui - were crafted to protect the expensive sewing needles, while showcasing wealth and high craftmanship. The form also makes a convenient hinge structure. The fabric to hold the needles is not present. This charming object belongs to a broader category of étuis and sewing accessories that were status symbols among well-to-do women in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The miniature book shape was a popular and emblematic conceit for needle cases, combining the practical devotional needlework - being associated with feminine virtue - and books as the source of piety and devotional reading. The Netherlands were a centre for such luxury small metalwork, particularly Amsterdam. Dutch goldsmiths excelled at combining gilt brass or silver with semi-precious stones like agates, garnets, cornelians and jaspers. The cabochon settings are typical: unfaceted polished stones with a flat base in collet mounts, creating a jewel-like surface. In fine condition. The "boards", as well as the "spine" of the gilded metal case are in an openwork floral design with scrolling foliage with a standing eagle in the centre. One clasp closure in the middle of the front edge. Both "boards" set with 8 small round cabochon agates (diametre: 7 mm).…
