Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. All essays have appeared previously either in scholarly or professional journals, or as parts of books. Some have been slightly revised for this printing. Included among others are: J. Lucas, "Minds, Machines and Gödel". "Minds, Machines and Gödel" is J. R. Lucas's 1959 philosophical paper in which he argues that a human mathematician cannot be accurately represented by an algorithmic automaton. Appealing to Gödel's incompleteness theorem, he argues that for any such automaton, there would be some mathematical formula which it could not prove, but which the human mathematician could both see, and show, to be true. The paper is a Gödelian argument against mechanism. Lucas presented the paper in 1959 to the Oxford Philosophical Society. Also included : D. MacKay, "Mindlike Behavior in Artefacts"; M. Polyanyi, "Experience and the Perception of Pattern"; A. Gurwitsch, "On the Conceptual Consciousness"; N. Sutherland, "Stimulus Analyzing Mechanisms"; K. Sayre, "Human and Mechanical Recognition"; G. Ryle, "Sensation and Observation"; A. Newell, "The Chess Machine"; A. Rapoport, "Technological Models of the Nervous System". Dust jacket has a crease and a small chip on the front panel. It is price-clipped. 6¼" - 9½". book.
